Molasses does go bad...and a weekly, pantry cleaning recap

Apparently, it does.  Or at least mine did.  I mean, I've had molasses in my cupboard since the dawn of time.  I don't think I've ever had a bottle turn like this one did.  I mean, it was SERIOUSLY bitter.  Like salt mixed with vinegar bitter.  I really should have gone with my gut instincts when I started to pour it, BUT I didn't.  I had a window and wanted to make the best of it.  Yeah...that didn't happen.  I made the worst of it.  I mean the worst cupcakes EVAH!  So embarrassing I'm not even going to show you what they looked like cause ima make it a good recipe at some point and WOW YOU!  *snort*

After doing some research, I can only guess that it's because it's in the cabinet next to the stove.  If it stays in a cool, dry place, it should be fine.  That cabinet does not stay cool and dry.  Dry yes.  Cool no.  I have had to move my chocolate squares in the cabinet because I noticed it gets warm.  Which is weird because the oven is on the bottom, not the top.  AND it's high enough above the stove, so I'm not really sure why it gets warm, but it does.

On our weekend travels, we ventured into an H Mart in Fairfax.  I needed more peppers.  I was looking for mulato peppers and annato?  At least I think that's what I was looking for.  I could spend HOURS in international food stores.  HOURS.  We rounded the corner of the produce and came across this:

No clue what it is.  Something Indian I think?  It was next to the Indian eggplants.  They just looked so...Martian I had to snap a pic to share with y'all.  We had a few hours to kill before our time slot at the attic sale.

About once a quarter, REI has what they call an attic sale.  They have an insagn return policy and what they can't put back on the shelf goes into the "warehouse" for these attic sales.  You have to be a member to be able to purchase the attic sales items.  THIS is what we were doing this weekend.  This and this.  Which meant that S did the shopping with me again this weekend.  Can I just say...I do hate people.  Not like people I know, of course, but the mass strangers that wander aimlessly as if they're the ONLY PEOPLE ON THE PLANET in the grocery stores.  They irritate me to NO END!  Seriously?  There are BILLIONS of other people on this planet and a few million live in this area.  WAKE UP!  I hope you don't drive your car like you do your cart...cause we're all...well...never mind.

So this week was all about

They even gave it a name here...snowquestration.  It was more like snowquestionable.  It did come down and quite hard most of the day, BUT it was pretty much gone the next day.  Which was fine with me.  I got to spend some quality time with the oven and play with pea flour.  I will have to revisit that recipe, too.  They're good, but just not quite what I was thinking.

This week was full of some yummy, pantry cleaning dishes.

Mock-sagna, Artichoke and Olive Bruschetta Chiekn, Hot Hamburger, Sun-Dried Tomato Meatlball Sammies, Stove Top Tuna Casserole, Healthier Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Pistachio and Lime Muffins with Lime Glaze
Now the pantry is pretty empty less the pasta.  I need to work on using up the pasta, but for the most part the canned goods are nice and thinned out.  Maybe some peanut noodles and stir-fried beef?  Thai Peanut Noodle Salad?  Something like that would use up some noodles.  There's too much farfalle, though.  I'm not a huge fan of that, but Dad seemed to love it and gave me all his pasta when he went back on the no carb kick.  Farfalle just doesn't cook right for me.  The edges of the bow ties usually just break off when I'm cooking it.  Does it to you, too?  No?  Yes?  If not, how not?  I just am not a fan of pasta that falls apart when I'm cooking it.

There is no farfalle on the menu this week...

Sunday - Mole Rubbed Flat Iron Steaks with Chili Roasted Potatoes and Parsnips
Monday - Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Peppers with Tossed Salad
Tuesday - Shrimp Caesar Salad
Wednesday - Coffee Rubbed Pork Chops with Roasted Carrots and Buttered Noodles
Thursday - Cheddar Chicken Chowder
Saturday - Moroccan Roasted Chicken with Couscous and Zucchini

I am also making Chocolate Cherry Guiness Bread and hopefully Gingerbread Latte Cupcakes.  At some point, I'm going to try my hand at making macaroons.  But that's not this weekend.

Oh, and did I tell you I'm going BACK to Bogota?  Yes, I WILL be going to Agave Azul to have that beef again.  Maybe this time, I'll be able to replicate the sauce.  So, stay tuned in April for more adventures in Colombia.
